Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is HBOT?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a non-invasive medical therapy used to treat wounds which may be challenging to heal?

  • 2. How Does HBOT work?

It provides increased oxygen, under greater than normal pressure, to magnify the body's healing mechanisms and accelerate wound healing.

  • 3. What is a laymen's explanation of the science at work in HBOT Therapy?

The most essential ingredient of the body's healing system is oxygen.  When more oxygen is added to the blood stream, the healing system, which operates at the cell level, is stimulated beyond its' normal effectiveness to heal injured tissue.

  • 4. What Does an HBOT Therapy Session Look Like?

HBOT is accomplished in an air tight chamber where 100% oxygen is introduced at higher than normal pressure.  The patient is typically in the chamber for approximately 80 minutes for each treatment.

  • 5. What is HBOT Used to Treat?

HBOT treats a range of body injuries and disorders including diabetes and cancer wounds, burn injuries, crush injuries, TBI, and PTSD.  There are over 2500 functioning HBOT Chambers in the United States at last count.

  • 6. How Many Sessions are Needed to Improve PTSD and TBI Injury Symptoms?

For TBI and PTSD patients, a therapy regimen is normally 40 sessions.  Symptom improvement is often experienced between 10 and 20 sessions.

  • 7. What Does HBOT Cost?

For this program, the therapy is jointly funded by the State of North Carolina, and the Durham, NC, Extivita Clinic where treatment will be provided.
